Welcome!

My niece joined the family on July 12th, 2010. This special young lady's mother is my younger sister, which in classic Chinese culture makes me her Jiu Jiu (舅舅) -- thus the title of this blog. Here I intend to semi-regularly post reflections, thoughts, stories, and assorted whathaveyous pertaining to our trip to China, adoption in general, and (mostly) watching my niece grow up. Since the web is a very public place, I will attempt to maintain my family's privacy while telling the story... but I invite you to follow the blog and come along for the adventure!

Catching Up: International Night Dance Performance (2017_04_21)

Late in April of 2017 (the 21st, to be exact), Miri's CCACC Chinese Dance class was invited to perform at the Tilden Middle School International Night.  Not everyone could make it, but the girls did a great job of filling a massive space (performances were in the gym) with roughly half the normal number of dancers.

On the way into the school for International Night
We all enjoyed the many types of food from around the world being given out!
The girls had to quickly learn a routine modified for the extra space & missing dancers!
"Anybody have a safety pin...?"

There was a parade of nations that included countries from Europe, Asia, and all the Americas, and then the various performances began.  After being treated to several dance & musical acts, it was the girls' turn....

...and they did a great job entertaining the audience!

After the younger group performed, the older girls wowed the crowd despite almost the entire class being unable to attend the event to perform.

Afterwards, more groups performed --  including two families with very young children -- and the event closed out with a couple of very spirited K-pop numbers by a group of older girls.  Our girls missed a couple of the numbers because they had to get out of costume, but they still enjoyed watching most of the other acts.  Once all the hoopla ended and the event came to an official close, there was time for some congratulatory high fives and even some running around to burn off excess energy, and then it was time for all the families to return to their own international homes for the evening.

"Ya done good, Binky!"
High velocity fly-by

All in all, it was a very enjoyable evening and successful public performance for the girls. Next stop... an outdoor stage in downtown Rockville!
